Teachers
Meagan Bubulka, a middle school math teacher at Freedom Middle School in Berwyn, immediately recognized the advantages of using the flipped model of teaching in her classroom. Starting in January 2012, she began exploring how this could work in her own math classes. She explored using videos from Kahn Academy, videos she created using various screencasting tools on her computer and iPad, online practice games and assessments, etc. After a variety of successes and failures, she recognized the need to formalize the process of "flipping" her class.
After a professional development day using the iWork software, Meagan realized the power of using Numbers in a math class. Numbers lets you build interactive pages that can include elements like tables and graphs that can do advanced calculations. Around the same time she began planning math lessons with the other 8th grade math teacher at Freedom Middle School, Colleen Humphris. When she mentioned this idea to one of the district's new instructional coaches (and good friend) Lindsey Lahr, the project took off!
Please note: Freedom Middle School student each have their own MacBook computer which they take home each night as part of the district 1:1 program.
