Planning for this unit involved two 8th grade math teachers (Meagan Bubulka and Colleen Humphris) and one instructional coach (Lindsey Lahr).
Meagan, Colleen and Lindsey started meeting in early October to begin planning this unit. Their two main goals were to "flip" their math classes and to align their content to the Common Core State Standards.
The standards in focus for this unit were related to Patterns in Bivariate Data:
8.SP.1
8.SP.2
8.SP.3
8.SP.4
The first challenge was to come up with a way to assemble all of the information for this unit in one place that students could access. As they tossed around ideas of using a Google document, posting information daily on their content management system, building a separate website, they soon realized their goal wasn't to just provide the acces to resources for students, but to actually structure their learning to provide the best support. They decided to build the entire unit into a Numbers file that students would download at the beginning of the unit. The file would have links to all videos, websites, and documents students would need.
Lindsey and Meagan worked daily during anytime they could find to meet (which was often during a short 30 minute lunch in a classroom full of students wanting help on their current math assignments). Meagan and Lindsey collaborated on the creation of the activities and assessments and Meagan worked late nights and long weekends to find or create the best possible instructional videos and align everything into a cohesive unit. Colleen helped to plan and edit along the way and provide feedback.
After much discussion and many edits, the unit was ready!
Overall Plan:
1. Pre-Assessment (this was a 10-question Discovery Education probe)
2. Introduction Activity
3. Numbers File (this was a step-by-step guide students followed which included videos, links to online practice games, SMART Notebook practice files, integrated activities, and directions for class work.)
4. Final Project
5. Post-Assessment (the same 10-questions probe)
