Teaching

The Beginning.....

After the pre-assessment on Tuesday, Meagan and Colleen began the unit on November 7th with the introduction activity "Limbo Time."  This was designed to get students engaged and thinking about data!  Students were challenged to see how many times they could make it under a limbo bar.  As a class, they limbo-ed and then recorded their data in a chart on the SMARTBoard, all while listening to the Limbo Song and wearing Hawaiian leis!

They immediately recognized that limbo-ing was easier for the shorter students (this was part of the plan!).....so we asked them if we could prove that with data?  The class decided to measure their heights and plot the data points on a graph to find out.  The table and graph were all set up in advance so it was quick and simple to do.  The results led to a discussion of correlations, trendlines, outliers, and predicting.  The principal even came in and students predicted how many times he would make it under the bar!  Check the Resources page for the lesson plan.
